Summit ESC creates personalized solutions for Ohio educators, students, and families, and new staff members enable us to do that with excellence and focus. Each one allows us to serve school districts in unique and individualized ways when needs arise.

We are glad every new member of the team is here and that, together, we can be as dedicated as possible to making a difference for schools across Ohio.

Summit Educational Service Center (Summit ESC) is committed to elevating the effectiveness of school boards across Northeast Ohio.

Last Spring with Revere Board of Education: Summit ESC facilitated key sessions focusing on critical governance functions such as communication strategies and goal setting for superintendents. These interventions aimed to enhance transparency and operational efficiency, setting a model for other boards in terms of strategic governance.

Leadership Symposium in August: This session brought together school board members from various districts to discuss contemporary challenges and share best practices in governance. Topics covered included effective use of technology in board meetings, mastering Robert’s Rules for orderly conduct, and legal compliance with Ohio’s Sunshine Laws. The symposium session served as a crucial platform for networking and collaborative learning.

Recent Session with Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools: Dr. Christina Dinklocker led a workshop focusing on the roles and responsibilities of board members. Using interactive methods like the post-it notes activity, the session provided clear insights into effective board governance and fostered a participatory learning environment.

Feedback from these initiatives has been overwhelmingly positive. Participants have reported a deeper understanding of their roles and a strengthened ability to lead within their districts effectively. Keith Malick, Board President from Revere, noted that Summit ESC “brought a unique set of skills, experiences, and integrity to the table” that provided a greater level of comfort among Board members. In addition, “Joe, Jeff, and Tina provided ideas to help our Board develop techniques to ensure openness and collaboration amongst ourselves that ultimately creates unity, trust, and success.”

We invite other school boards to participate in our future sessions and benefit from our proven strategies and dedicated support. If you are interested in learning more about our Board services or wish to enhance your own board's capabilities, please contact Dr. Christina Dinklocker at [email protected].

Additionally, mark your calendars for our upcoming event, Lifting Leaders: Levy Campaigns, on January 29, 2025. This session will delve into the evolving landscape of levy campaigns, offering legal and practical guidance on effective communication strategies. Ideal for school board members, superintendents, treasurers, district administrators, communication specialists, and members of district levy committees. Whether attending solo or as a team, this event promises crucial insights for anyone involved in levy campaigns.

Summit ESC remains dedicated to building stronger educational communities by empowering school boards with the essential tools for success in a dynamic educational environment.

Summit ESC warmly welcomes a new cohort of superintendents, ushering in a promising era of educational leadership.

  • Amiee Kirsch, Copley-Fairlawn
  • Gary Hinton, Manchester
  • Daniel White, Revere
  • Dr. Felisha Gould, Stow Munroe Falls
  • Dr. Joe Clark, Waterloo
  • Michael Dobran, Windham Exempted Village
We are especially proud to have facilitated the superintendent searches for the Manchester, Revere, and Waterloo school districts and be involved alongside each district’s Board of Education throughout the process.

Our role in the searches for Manchester, Revere, and Waterloo — as well as a minor role in Copley-Fairlawn — involved a collaborative approach, ensuring that the leaders chosen were perfectly aligned with the goals and values of these districts.

The leadership search services we offer are designed to be comprehensive and community-focused. We engage district boards and community stakeholders in a rigorous process that includes setting leadership criteria, thoroughly vetting candidates, and providing ongoing support to new superintendents.

This process is vital to ensuring that each leader is well-prepared to meet the challenges of their role and drive positive outcomes in their districts.

“We are excited to see the transformative impact these leaders will make,” Joseph Iacano, Superintendent of Summit ESC, says. “Our direct involvement in the selection of [these] superintendents highlights our commitment to fostering effective educational leadership.”

Thank you to all the districts we serve for trusting us with such important guidance and help when looking for new leadership. It’s our privilege to come alongside you and find just the right person to fit your needs and goals!

Each district’s culture — or “how we do things around here” — is easily felt and sensed by school staff and by those who use Summit ESC’s services. In schools, our “customers” include students, parents, and the community.

The Cultural Foundations Enhancement Service we offer seeks to transform educational environments by focusing on core elements like effective communication, strong relationships, and proactive stress management.

Through targeted discussions and collaborative planning, we assist a variety of districts in creating a vibrant culture that promotes continuous improvement and team unity — setting the stage for long-term strategic growth.

Both Cuyahoga Heights and Woodridge were recent participants in this training … and unlike our standard in-service offerings, this service deviates from the conventional lesson plan flow, reflecting the unique nature of each district’s needs. This individualized approach ensures that the service precisely addresses the distinct culture and goals of each participating district, fostering meaningful and sustainable changes.

Here are a few thoughts from one district about their experience …

“The experience, wisdom, and expertise of Dr. Dinklocker were invaluable in empowering
my team to explore the complexities of our organization’s culture. Her approach and ability
to engage us in meaningful dialogue, reflective thoughts, and actionable solutions was so
impactful. She met us ‘where we are’ during each session, allowing us to be vulnerable, honest,
and empathetic. One team member stated, ‘I loved her soft-spoken, gentle, and honest approach.
She genuinely cares and makes you feel important. She seems very trustworthy.’ Although we
have just touched the surface, having someone of Dr. Dinklocker’s talent as a resource and change
agent gives me confidence that the work ahead of us can be both transformational and sustainable.”
—Matt Young, Cuyahoga Heights Assistant Superintendent

Overall, the concept of studying and changing a culture for the better in the education industry emerged after schools reopened after the Covid shutdown. Districts tried to pick up where they left off assuming everything was where we left it only to find that somehow, we were all different.

District leaders recognized a need for a “reset,” not quite knowing what that felt like or meant. So, Summit ESC — after receiving some requests to intervene — came up with a plan to step in and help define the work to help districts examine themselves, reset, and move forward as renewed organizations.

We are excited that schools are choosing to have these discussions, move toward better communication (within and without), and make decisions to improve current practices — all while being held accountable.

It’s yet another way we’re committed to solidifying your district’s vision for student and community success while building upon the strong cultural foundation already established!

Coventry Local School District and Tallmadge City School District are at the halfway mark of an impactful two-year pilot program, backed by Peg’s Foundation, aimed at enhancing student well-being.

The program, supported by Summit ESC’s Wellness Initiatives Department, introduces Behavioral Health and Wellness Coordinators and Student Assistance Programs (SAP) based on the Ohio School Wellness Initiative model.

Throughout the first year, these coordinators have used the Panorama universal screener to assess students' social-emotional needs, delivering school-wide lessons and targeted group sessions. Results have been promising, with notable improvements in areas like emotional regulation:

  • 82% of participants showed positive growth,
  • With 36% making significant strides.
One student with generational mental health and substance use challenges became the first person in her family to be able to access mental health treatment. Her parent shares:

“Thank you so much for everything you have done for us. We greatly appreciate it.
My child is doing better with all the help and support she is getting. I have seen her
practice a few things at home she’s learned from the group. We’re learning how to
help her as well. We really can’t thank you enough!”

Community collaboration has been another cornerstone of this initiative. Coordinators partnered with local agencies to bring life skills education to students, covering critical areas like stress management and coping strategies. Additionally, the program addressed substance use prevention, featuring a vaping awareness campaign, and the introduction of the “Too Good For Drugs” curriculum for 11th graders.

With nearly 100 referrals to SAP between both districts, students received access to essential resources, from counseling to basic needs support. As the program progresses, coordinators are set to leverage year-one insights and refine interventions, continuing their commitment to fostering a healthier, more resilient student body during this school year.

It takes dedication from all sides to see success in these key areas. Summit ESC couldn’t make a difference in students’ and families’ lives without your support and commitment!

Steve’s legacy extends beyond formulas and figures; he has significantly impacted the lives of many, ensuring a lasting influence on future generations of mathematicians.

2. Missi Zender-Sakach, Science, Health, and Physical Education Content Consultant

Missi Zender-Sakach of Summit ESC was both nominated and awarded the Friend of Science Award for 2023 — which serves as a testament to her passion for science education.

The Friend of Science Award “is given to a science educator or non-educator who has positively influenced science education in the State of Ohio and/or the nation through a specific project or sustained activities. This award recognizes activities that are more related to servicing the science education community than to specific teaching activities. Service to the science education community includes the effective creation of situations that promote active learning and encourage a love of science.”

To quote from Missi’s nomination:

“Missi has a deep reservoir of energy that she taps for science education every day.
She has been with SECO for around 25 years and in that time has served as a treasurer
and a district director, as well as an active member of the conference committee …
[In her role at] Summit ESC, [she] connects science educators with resources and
organizations to make their teaching as effective as possible. She is driven to make sure
teachers and students have great experiences with science and invests countless hours
in delivering materials, trainings, and contact information. If you mention a need to Missi,
she will relentlessly seek ways to connect people and resources until the need is met.”

Thank you, Missi, for being a true asset to the educational and science world!
