Summit ESC’S Steve Miller to Receive 2019 OCTM Bert Waits Friend of Mathematics Award

Summit ESC is proud to announce that Steve Miller has received the 2019 Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) Bert Waits Friend of Mathematics Award, a state-level recognition for individuals who have positively influenced mathematics education in Ohio.

Miller was chosen from more than 120 applicants who were nominated for the OCTM Teacher Awards, which recognize outstanding teachers, professors, emerging leaders and friends of mathematics. Through a rigorous selection process, 21 educators were chosen for the district awards and six were selected for the state awards, including Miller. The award winners will be honored at the annual OCTM Conference in Sandusky, Ohio, during a banquet on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019.

“We are grateful to have Steve on the Summit ESC team; he brings so much experience, knowledge and a passion for mathematics that really shines through his work every day,” said Summit ESC Superintendent Joseph Iacano. “All of us at Summit ESC congratulate Steve on this great accomplishment!”

Miller currently serves as a Mathematics Content Consultant for Summit ESC where he provides K-12 mathematics professional development, curriculum writing/mapping support and assistance in selecting mathematics resources. Prior to arriving at Summit ESC, Miller taught in Akron Public Schools for 35 years.

Each year, the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics acknowledges standout teachers, professors, emerging leaders and friends of mathematics. Teachers can be nominated by a colleague, administrator, student or parent. Once nominated, teachers submit an application. From those applicants, an outstanding elementary, middle and high school teacher is selected from each of the eight districts based on their philosophy on how students learn mathematics, their participation in professional development and organizations, as well as their leadership roles. After receiving a district award, teachers are eligible to apply for a state teaching award. To learn more about the OCTM awards, please visit www.ohioctm.org/teacher-awards
