On January 30, the Science Education Council of Ohio (SECO) held an award ceremony for the SECO Science Symposium where Dr. Missi Zender-Sakach received the Friend of Science Award for 2023.

Missi has positively influenced science education in Ohio throughout her 33 years of dedication to SECO by serving as a treasurer and a district director, as well as an active member of the conference committee. The Friend of Science award recipient  is someone whose “activities are more related to servicing the science education community than to specific teaching activities. Service to the science education community includes the effective creation of situations that promote active learning and encourage a love of science.” Missi most certainly fits this description and goes above and beyond as a Friend of Science.

We are privileged to have Missi as a part of the Summit ESC team as  our Science, Health, and Physical Education Consultant where she connects science educators with resources and organizations to make their teaching as effective as possible.

“If you mention a need to Missi, she will relentlessly seek ways to connect people and resources until the need is met,” remarks Missi’s nominators Kristie Reighard and Sally Pfeiffer. “She is driven to make sure that teachers and students have great experiences with science and invests countless hours in delivering materials, trainings, and contact information.”

Congratulations Missi and thank you for your immense contributions to students through the science education community!
