Resilience Rising: School Strategies for Crisis Response and Trauma Recovery

Presented by: Lori Morgan- M.Ed. Ed.S. School Counselor
 
Lori has been a trained Crisis Response Counselor for 23 years. She is trained in both the NOVA (National Organization of Victim Assistance) and CISM (Critical Intervention Stress Management) response models. She has responded to mass shootings and large scale natural and man-made disasters including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and Francis, Chardon and Santa Fe High School Shootings, murders, kidnappings, car accidents, suicides, and many other various responses. She has also partnered with therapy and facility dogs in her professional capacity for 28 years. She is a member of the Ohio Crisis Response Team, Ohio Education Association Crisis Response Team, and the National Organization of Victim Assistance. 
 
 
This training will address these topics:
•  Review the basics of the National of Organization of Victim Assistance Crisis Response Model
•  Give specific lines of questioning to guide a crisis response interaction individually and in a group setting
•  Give examples of responses to use in crisis intervention interactions
•  Review the science of trauma (what occurs in our brain and body during a traumatic event.)
•  Compare and contrast the differences between a school based and community-based crisis response event and natural vs man-made disasters
•  Highlight important points in planning a school crisis response plan and review an example
•  Review ways to support your teachers, students, and parents in the aftermath of a crisis
•  Share lessons learned from the aftermath of a school shooting from a school and answer questions. This portion will be presented by a Chardon High School Counselor who was present on the day of their school shooting event and worked for 12 additional years post-event.
•  Review the difference between grief and trauma and how to support students experiencing both
•  Discuss how trauma may affect what we see in the classroom
•  Share information directly from students who have experienced trauma and loss would like adults to know
•  Share information on best practice and how to incorporate a facility or therapy dog in crisis response or counseling work
