Our Mission
The Curriculum and Instruction Department is committed to providing educators in Summit, Lake, Geauga, Medina, Portage, Lorain, Stark, and Cuyahoga counties with high quality professional learning and resources, which lead to building individual and collective capacity for the improvement of student learning and the development of the whole child.

Our Vision
In order to fulfill our mission, the Curriculum and Instruction Department will function as a true professional learning community committed to research and data-based decision making, cooperation, collegiality, mutual support, and sensitivity to the needs of our stakeholders.

Our Goals
  • Provide learning opportunities for teachers and administrators to improve their abilities to implement standards and research-based instructional practices
  • Serve as a support network while strategically growing the capacities of the educators in our area

Patricia Clayton is the Social Studies Consultant at the Summit ESC. She served as a classroom teacher, athletic director, faculty advisor for various clubs at Mogadore High School for 25 years. Other state and local roles have included:

Ohio Council for the Social Studies
Patricia has written articles for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Ohio Council for Social Studies, served as a lead for a 5-million-dollar federal American history grant, and served as a social studies consultant for Scott Foresman, Houghton Mifflin, and Jarret. Pat was the 2017 Summit County Woman of the Year for Innovation. She has also presented at national, state, and regional conferences.

Angela is the Summit ESC’s Educator Quality Consultant. She has been a teacher and administrator at the middle and high school levels in various districts throughout Northeast Ohio.  Angela has presented at national, state, and regional conferences.

Debbie Theirl, M.Ed.
English Language Arts/ Literacy Content Specialist K-12
Debbie Theirl is a consultant with the department of Curriculum and Instruction. She has served as principal, curriculum specialist, Reading Recovery Teacher-Leader, literacy coach, Title I/Federal Programs consultant, and classroom teacher for two Northeast Ohio school districts. Additionally, Debbie serves as a State Support Team Region 8 school improvement consultant.
Debbie holds the following roles at the state level:
